Announcing HID ActivID® ActivClient 7.1 for Windows

August 9, 2016

HID Global announces the availability of ActivID® ActivClient 7.1 for Windows, the latest version of the market-leading advanced security client that protects workstations and networks with smart cards and USB tokens. ActivID ActivClient is the leading smart card middleware used with Common Access Card (CAC), Personal Identity Verification (PIV) and Personal Identity Verification – Interoperable (PIV-I) smart cards in the US Federal Government.
The new version is designed to offer the highest level of security and compliance with the latest Microsoft™ products, and adds support for the new Microsoft Edge browser on the Windows 10 platform.
The ActivID ActivClient 7.1 improvements include:

  • Microsoft® Edge and improved Windows® 10 support. With this release, ActivClient extends its support for the Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 platforms to provide increased coverage of smart card usage scenarios. For example, customers can now use the latest Microsoft Edge browser for SSL and TLS-based smart card authentication to web sites. Windows Universal Apps can now also leverage ActivClient for smart card authentication.
  • Microsoft Office® 2013 and 2016 support. Enterprise customers can now leverage ActivClient for smart card-based authentication, signature and encryption with the latest Microsoft Office versions. ActivClient automatically configures the Outlook® security profile based on smart card certificates, reducing the configuration effort for smart card users.
  • Bundled Software Development Kit. ActivID ActivClient includes samples and documentation for the standard-based APIs it supports: Microsoft Mini Driver / CNG, PKCS#11, PIV and BSI. These APIs provide access to Public Key cryptography (PKI), One-Time Password and data storage services on smart cards. C and Java interfaces are available

ActivID ActivClient 7.1 is available at no charge to ActivID ActivClient customers with a current maintenance contract. It can be electronically downloaded from HID Global’s Identity Assurance Support Portal.

Current ActivID ActivClient customers:
HID Global recommends customers using ActivID ActivClient 6.2 or 7.0.x to upgrade to version 7.1. Version 6.2 and 7.0.x are no longer available to new customers but will be supported until July 2018.
The ActivID ActivClient SDK is now bundled in ActivID ActivClient; as a result, the part numbers for the stand alone ActivClient SDK (DKCXXXWL, DKCXXXWLM4 and DKCXXXWLM5) as a separate product have been discontinued (DKCXXXWL, DKCXXXWLM4 and DKCXXXWLM5). ActivClient SDK customers can now access the same functionality at no charge as part of the ActivClient license.

End of Support for Legacy RFID Tags in FARGO Card Printers

End of support for legacy RFID tags in FARGO HDP5000 and HDPii/HDPii Plus card printers.

The latest printer firmware upgrade version 5.4.5 for the FARGO® HDP5000 and HDPii/HDPii Plus printers disables support for legacy radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. As a result, consumables manufactured prior to October 2013 will not be supported by HDP5000 or HDPii/HDPii Plus printers utilizing printer firmware versions 5.4.5 and above.
.
Customers who place consumables with legacy RFID technology into a HDP5000 or HDPii/HDPii Plus printer with firmware version 5.4.5 or above will get an error of “no ribbon” when a print job is sent to the printer. The RFID technology being used on the printer consumables is denoted by color coded RFID tags. Green, white or clear RFID tags use legacy RFID technology, while red RFID tags use the new RFID technology.
Firmware version 5.4.5 provides various enhancements and improvements, including support for HDP5600 consumables in HDP5000 printers. This firmware version will enable customers using both HDP5000 and HDP5600 printers to consolidate to a single set of supplies that function in both printer models.
Since only HID Global’s FARGO printer consumables for HDP5000 and HDPii/HDPii Plus printers manufactured before October 2013 are affected by this change, HID does not anticipate this change to affect customers. However, options are available to support customers who still desire to use outdated consumables inventory, including replacement of the legacy consumables or downgrading printer firmware to a prior version that provides support for legacy RFID technology.
Please note that downgrading firmware will remove performance enhancements and support for new features and functionality that are added into firmware revisions having a version number of 5.4.5 or higher.
Version 5.4.5 firmware will be made available for download immediately.

Integration Between BlackBerry and Entrust IdentityGuard Mobile Credential

Entrust Datacard Completes Technology Integration Between BlackBerry and Entrust IdentityGuard Mobile Smart Credential

Integration provides secure, transparent, smartcard-strength mobile access for blackberry 10 users

MINNEAPOLIS—(July 12, 2016)—Entrust Datacard today announced that the company has completed a technology integration between the Entrust® IdentityGuard Mobile Smart Credential and the BlackBerry 10 Smart Card Service Framework. The integration is an additional step toward providing Entrust Datacard customers with frictionless, high assurance mobile solutions in combination with strategic partners like BlackBerry.

The combined solution provides BlackBerry 10 users with secure access to both enterprise and cloud-based applications on their devices without the need for physical tokens or smart cards. Traditionally, smartcard based access to sensitive enterprise applications has been limited to desktop or laptop computers. As mobile becomes the primary computing platform, government agencies and enterprises are now able to fully utilize the power of mobile devices and provide employees access to sensitive applications or documents without compromising security policies.

"It is important that we provide solutions that not only increase productivity and streamline business processes, but also ensure that proper identity and access controls are in place to protect the business," said Ryan Zlockie, vice president of authentication solutions for Entrust Datacard. "We are pleased to expand our technology integration relationship with BlackBerry and to provide high assurance mobile access to government agencies and enterprises."

The Entrust® Mobile Smart Credential embeds a virtual smart card in mobile devices that secures user access to a range of mobile-enabled services with a single sign on including VPN access, web application access, encrypted email and digital form signing. The solution provides strong enterprise level security, while remaining transparent to the user and is specifically relevant for government agencies and enterprises who require higher strength security or the ability to control user privileges.

"At BlackBerry we are focused on providing security conscious organizations high assurance enterprise mobility management solutions," said Mark Wilson, Chief Evangelist at BlackBerry. "Integrating the Entrust® IdentityGuard Mobile Smart Credential into our smart card service framework allows us to offer customers alternative authentication choices for accessing data on their devices."

In addition to meeting the trusted identity needs of enterprise organizations, the Entrust® IdentityGuard Mobile Smart Credential solution helps US government agencies address the NIST 800-157 Mobile Derived PIV credential standard by providing the required controls for provisioning identities and securing mobile access to applications and use.
