Fargo HDP5000 Clear Transfer Film 84053 Old and New

Since the inception of the Fargo HDP5000 Card Printer, there has been available the Clear Transfer Film, which is necessary for this card printer to operate, essentially to print cards.

The transfer film is made with 2 ends or pieces, one end is yellow, and the other is green.  The yellow end has the new/unused transfer film, the green end has the used film.
When Fargo began manufacturing their clear transfer film, the green end (we'll call it the green core) was green on one end, and grey on the other.
Fargo Clear Transfer Film 84053 OLD
This transfer film caused (and still causes) a lot of problems, because it was made with 2 separate pieces.

For some time now, Fargo has been making a NEW version of the film, where the green core is one whole piece, green from one end to the other.
Fargo Clear Transfer Film 84053 NEW
This is the transfer film you want, not the old version!
We see the OLD film still in circulation from time to time, even though Fargo has not made it for many years, which would mean these rolls of film are very old.

The most common issue surrounding the OLD transfer film, is that it would 'walk' to one side.

When the HDP5000 printer goes through it's print phase, the color ribbon and transfer film move together, and thus both must move smoothly and consistently while the image is being printed on to the film.

If the film has started to 'walk' to one side, it has shifted, and is not rolling centered on to the green core (which is the used film). If you try and roll/spin the film, while holding the cartridge in your hands, and you feel resistance and tension, that the film is not moving smoothly, this is exactly the problem, and you will encounter many different errors from the printer, such as 'card jam' and 'check film' and others.

It's not to say that the OLD film will not work, because many or most of them can and will work just fine, but if you run into these errors and problems, it may be some bad OLD film, which you can then simply replace with a new roll, and/or make some adjustments to try and center the film.

We have also seen the NEW film 'walk' to one side, whether using an OLD or NEW model of HDP5000 printer.  Fargo technicians have advised us, that when we see this happen, and where not many transfers from the roll have been used, then this roll is simply deemed 'defective', to notify them, and they will replace this defective roll of film at no charge.

So no matter which Fargo HDP5000 printer model you're using, avoid using the OLD clear transfer film!

They are in fact...OLD...

Entrust Datacard Collaborates with VMware to Streamline Access to Enterprise Applications for Mobile Users

Entrust Datacard, VMware Workspace ONE and VMware AirWatch to deliver a strong security and regulatory compliance solution that allows for mobile access to enterprise applications

MINNEAPOLIS—(June 14, 2017)—Entrust Datacard, a leading provider of trusted identity and secure transaction technologies, today announced that the company has entered into a technology collaboration with VMware to support enterprise mobility through VMware Workspace ONE™ and VMware AirWatch®. The collaboration will provide mutual customers with an integrated and secure solution that helps meet the needs of an increasingly mobile and remote workforce by providing secure access to enterprise applications from a mobile device, all while meeting regulatory compliance requirements. The collaboration with VMware adds to the company’s portfolio of EMM partners, providing customers with flexibility to meet their evolving digital business initiatives.

Today, mobile devices and cloud applications are transforming user experiences and raising customer expectations. Enterprises and government agencies must find a balance between providing employees with access to better apps and tools and also ensuring the security of their enterprise assets. While security is top-of-mind, it is also important that it does not prevent enterprises and agencies from embracing mobile business transformation initiatives that enhance employee productivity and customer service. The offering will integrate the Entrust Datacard™ mobile smart credential, which embeds a virtual smartcard derived from the user’s certificated based identity into native apps and services such as mail, WiFi, and VMware AirWatch secured applications – all via the AirWatch Enterprise Mobility Management™ solution.

“As organizations expand the use of mobile technology in order to meet business initiatives and as government employees using mobile devices require secure access to internal resources, it is imperative that this sensitive information remains secure through identity-based authentication and is protected from unauthorized access,” said Ryan Zlockie, global vice president, authentication for Entrust Datacard. “Furthermore, the access provided to enterprise applications must be easy to access and provide the end user with a frictionless experience. Our collaboration with VMware does just that.”

The integrated solution will be available for Apple iOS and Android operating systems and will support secure access to email, WiFi, VPN and other enterprise applications. Additionally, the mobile solution will support secure Bluetooth login capabilities, which allows enterprises and governments to utilize a mobile device as a virtual smartcard for access to buildings and computers. Furthermore, the integration allows government agencies to provide their employees with remote access that meets Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12 (HSPD 12), Federal Information Processing Standard Publication (FIPS) 201 and NIST Special Publication (SP) 800-157.

"VMware and Entrust Datacard have collaborated on a solution to enable users to authenticate for secure access to sensitive information and applications from mobile devices,” said Adam Rykowski, vice president, product management, Mobile Products, End-User Computing, VMware. “The solution eliminates the need for passwords with an embedded virtual smart card that helps enable convenient access for users without compromising security. This solution is ideal for organizations with strong security requirements such as U.S. federal government agencies.”

Colored Streaks when Printing Photo ID Cards and Badges

We often see this issue, when printing a full color card, such as a photo ID card, or gift cards, membership cards, etc., you may find there are small to large colored streaks or lines along the printed image.Color streaks in a printed color card

Typically this is referred to as 'ribbon wrinkle', yet there are a few reasons this may occur.  Most often it is due to the card printer trying to print an image too dark, and too much heat is being applied through the printhead.  This can be the case whether you're using a re-transfer printer, or even DTC printers.  If you're not sure of the difference, Call Us and we can explain this to you more in detail.

Here are steps to follow in correcting this printing problem:

  • Reduce the 'Image Darkness' more negatively (-). For Fargo card printers, adjust in increments of -5. This setting is found within your printer driver, under Printing Preferences or Printer Properties. It may also be listed as 'YMC Intensity/Darkness'. Decreasing this value will force the printer to print everything less dark or intense, which will make your images lighter overall. This is why it is important to adjust thsi setting slowly, in small units, to find that perfect adjustment so there are no lines in your prints, yet the image colors are still rich and vibrant
  • Increase the 'Ribbon Supply Tension' by +5. For Fargo printers, you will find this in the 'Advanced Settings' (Printing Preferences - Toolbox)
  • Replace the ribbon. It is not very often we see or hear of defective color print ribbons, no matter the manufacturer/brand, yet it can happen, so it's always worth trying a new ribbon, if the other adjustments have not helped
  • Replace the ribbon cartridge. If your printer uses a cartridge, sometimes a part of a cartridge can break or bend, and then may not guide the ribbon smoothly or straight, hence causing inconsistencies in card printing
  • If the problem still persists, it may very well be the printhead itself that is the cause, and may need to be replaced. In this case, you may Call US for further advice and information, or to carry out this procedure, as it is delicate and not meant for end users to do so themselves.
