Providing Unique, High Visible Security case study

PARTNER PROFILE — TASK SISTEMAS, KABA GROUP
Kaba group, based in Switzerland, is one of the leading providers of access control and workforce management solutions in the world. This highly valued Entrust Datacard partner has an enduring 150-year tradition of providing innovative solutions and employs more than 7,500 people in 60 countries. In 2014, Kaba Group acquired Rio de Janeiro-based Task Sistemas to expand its activities in the promising Brazilian market. Together, they provide solutions specifically tailored to the needs of Brazilian companies ranging from ID and access control solutions to workforce management and closed-circuit television technology.

CHALLENGE: Provide a cost-effective and consistent solution for identifying all airport service providers and employees with badges that have highly visible security features and are nearly impervious to fraud.

SOLUTION: The airport called on Entrust Datacard partner Kaba Group to aid the search for a new badging system that would meet the airport’s heightened security needs.

RESULTS: The airport security badging printers were replaced with Datacard® CD800™ card printer with inline hologram lamination module and customized tactile impression.

High Stakes Situation
When it comes to security, the stakes are extremely high for airports around the world. Airport personnel need to be easily identified and access to sensitive areas needs to be strictly controlled. Any breach in staff or secure areas could lead to catastrophic consequences.

When Rio de Janeiro International Airport was privatized by the Brazilian government in 2014, the RioGaleao Consortium won the bid to modernize the facility and redefine all access control and security strategies. They wanted to find a cost-effective solution for badging of airport personnel that would provide highly visible security features that were nearly impervious to fraud.

“Our main business strategy is to add aggregate value to our customers’ projects — not focusing on low costs — but rather on the most cost-effective solutions available,” said the ID Products Manager for Task Sistemas — Kaba Group.

Complicating matters, there were many disparate groups that required access to various areas at the airport, some very sensitive. This required different access grants for employees and service providers such as airport ground personnel, aircraft on-board staff, cleaning and maintenance subcontractors, the airport security team, government personnel and duty-free employees.

Unique, Highly Visible Security
The consortium wanted to unify all employee and service provider badges — not just under the same ID card issuance structure, but with highly visible security features that were nearly impossible to copy. The badges also needed to be durable, as many of the airport staff are routinely in contact with chemicals such as cleaning agents and plane fuel.

Due to a previous relationship with the consortium, Task Sistemas was the only provider consulted on the project and they offered the Datacard® CD800™ card printer with an inline lamination module and a unique tactile impression feature.

The tactile impression — a patent-pending feature offered exclusively by Entrust Datacard — is an inline security feature with the CD800 card printer that creates an impression on the card and physically alters the substrate and overlay to help prevent counterfeiting. Any attempt to alter the card is immediately evident. While the impression can be made with a generic die, the consortium chose to create a custom-designed die for the cards that offer both heightened security and greater visual appeal.

“The tactile impression is a very unique feature, which also can be cost effective,” said the ID Products Manager. “The consortium seems to really like the quality and the beauty of the badges.”

Seamless Implementation
Since implementing the CD800 system, the consortium security staff has reissued the new high-security badges to all airport employees and support staff. It expects to issue approximately 30,000 ID cards each year with a full-color photo and tactile impression on the front and black text and a barcode on the back. A 1.0 mil Datacard® DuraGard® holographic laminate is added to all cards to prolong the life span of the card to two years, add a visual security element and provide the strongest defence against abrasion and chemical attack.

The card printer is integrated with Forzip card production software that was developed by Task Sistemas. The software is linked to the airport’s existing database and enables all cards to be created internally by security staff. The cards are currently used for both identification and access control at the airport.

To ensure a smooth startup of the new card printing system, Task Sistemas — Kaba Group provided consortium security staff with 30 hours of initial technical training. They also provide ongoing monthly maintenance and bureau staff services.

Over 10 Million EMV Chip Cards Instantly Issued within the USA in One Year

Entrust Datacard Achieves Instant Issuance Milestone – Over 10 Million EMV Chip Cards Instantly Issued within the U.S. in One Year

In-branch issuance of EMV cards is on the rise as the U.S. market continues to migrate to EMV chip card compliance.

MINNEAPOLIS—(May 4, 2016)—Entrust Datacard today announced that many of its U.S. instant issuance customers are migrating over to an EMV instant issuance program. As a result, over 10.6 million chip cards have been issued in the U.S. in the past 12 months utilizing Entrust Datacard instant issuance solutions. And, that number is projected to rise as more banks deploy instant issuance as part of their overall branch transformation and EMV compliance roll out.

Financial institutions are seeing a variety of benefits by enabling and optimizing their instant issuance card programs with EMV capabilities – from higher activation rates and card portfolio profitability; to increases in convenience, service levels and overall customer satisfaction; to helping educate consumers at the branch level on how to use EMV cards.

"Today, instant issuance technology allows banks to make their in-branch experiences more meaningful and efficient," said Ray Wizbowski, vice president financial vertical at Entrust Datacard. "Instant issuance provides a perfect opportunity for bank staff to educate customers about the benefits of their new chip card and instruct them on how to use the card. This instruction has a direct impact on the efficiency of branch operations moving low value transactions from the teller to the ATM as a result of the education provided with an instantly issued card."

Fraud is also a driving factor for increased instant EMV card issuance as more and more consumers need an emergency card replacement if their card information has been compromised. Giving consumers the ability to walk into a branch location to immediately receive an EMV card has helped turn a consumer experience from negative to positive. In addition, if a larger number of consumers are affected by fraudulent activity, the instant issuance of EMV cards can alleviate central issuance operations when reissues are needed. By leveraging instant issuance solutions, the financial institutions can also greatly reduce the amount of rush and overnight delivery costs that are associated with having to mail re-issued emergency card replacements.

"Instant Issuance also has a significant impact on overall customer satisfaction and card portfolio profitability," added Wizbowski. "A recent Javelin study indicated that cardholders are 22% more likely to be very-to-extremely satisfied with their bank if they received an instantly issued card. Additionally, financial institutions have indicated that activation rates of instantly issued cards is 100%, as opposed to the industry standard of approximately 60% activation rate of centrally issued cards. Instant issuance is clearly a win – not only for the customer, but for the bank as well."

Entrust Datacard has a long history of successful implementations supporting hundreds of EMV deployments and more than 30,000 instant issuance programs worldwide. With international and domestic experience, Entrust Datacard is well-positioned to help U.S. financial institutions make the shift to EMV instant issuance; additionally the company's entire installed customer-base has the ability to upgrade to EMV chip cards in an affordable and streamlined way.

Recent Chrome Upgrade Impacts Datacard TruCredential

A recent update to Google Chrome has removed features that Datacard TruCredential relies on for designing and rendering credentials. When using Google Chrome version 49.0.2623.87 or higher, users will experience TruCredential indefinitely loading when launching a workflow or credential design.

An update to the software is available to resolve the issue at https://www.datacard.com/support-and-drivers

In addition to changes to address the issues with Chrome, the updated installer will include some new features as well.

  • Connect composite, date, and dropdown fields to a barcode
  • Include database connections to views and synonyms
  • Directory Service interface can now be configured with an account outside the search base
  • Schema selection option on database connections
Changes to TruCredential are also made to minimize the likelihood of browser changes impacting graphics rendering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Who will this impact?
A1: Any Chrome user who has their browser set to auto update. All other users will not be impacted.

Q2: Is there a workaround prior to/instead of installing the new update?
A2: Downgrading isn’t really an option with Chrome. Turning off auto update is also not recommended, and can only be done via a registry change: http://dev.chromium.org/administrators/turning-off-auto-updates. If you do not want to install the update, we recommend that you switch to Internet Explorer.

Q3: How do we apply this for existing customers?
A3: Download the new installer, uninstall existing software, and run the downloaded installer.

Q4: Will I continue to have issues in the future if I use Chrome?
A4: Although we never know exactly what changes Chrome will make, this is likely a one-time issue.

Documents signed with an Entrust Document Signing Certificate contain visual trust indicators that provide recipients with proof that the sender's identity has been verified and that the document has not been altered during transmission. Visual indicators enable recipients to verify the signature's authenticity and to determine whether or not the document has been altered since the initial signing. Additionally, real-time assurance verifies the authenticity of a document throughout its lifetime, not just upon the initial transmission.

Before issuing a Document Signing Certificate, all registrants are vetted through a stringent verification process to ensure proper identity. Once a registrant's identification information is verified, they are provided with a digital ID which is used to apply a trusted digital signature to a document.

Today, Entrust Datacard offers a variety of certificate types, including individual signing certificates, manual and automatic group signing certificates and enterprise signing certificates.
